We will be implementing a new pooled storage model for Google Workspace for Education starting in July 2022, for all existing customers.
The purpose of this email is to help you understand the new storage policy.
What does this mean for my organization?
New Google Workspace for Education Storage Policy
In July 2022, the new storage model will provide educational organizations with a baseline of 100 TB of pooled cloud storage shared across all of your users. For reference, 100 TB accounts for more than enough storage for over 100 million docs, 8 million presentations or 400,000 hours of video. This model also allows storage to be easily managed across the entire domain, offering institutions better control over their storage experience on Google Workspace for Education.
You also have the option to purchase upgraded Google Workspace for Education editions, including Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, which both add storage capacity to your existing baseline pool. If you’re interested in piloting or purchasing the new Workspace for Education editions, please connect with your Google for Education point of contact or your preferred Workspace for Education partner.
Customers who sign a three-year Education Plus contract in 2021 or customers currently on legacy Education Plus full-domain subscriptions (G Suite Enterprise for Education) who continue to renew their subscription through 2023 will have an additional 18 months after July 2022 (through EOY 2023) to use as much storage as they need.
What do I need to do?
We strongly recommend you calculate your domain storage so you can decide whether purchasing a new Workspace for education edition is the right choice for you.
You can complete this action by using the new storage report and calculator for domain super admins to provide better visibility into storage use. This tool will reflect both your current estimated storage utilization and anticipated pooled storage allocation based on the monthly active users and licenses at your institution. You will be also able to adjust certain variables in these reports (eg. users or Education Plus licenses, etc) to model future scenarios. For more information on storage across your organization, please also see our Drive Storage FAQs.

What’s Coming Later This Year?
- We are offering additional free storage to support larger institutions.
Later this year, customers with more than 20,000 enrolled students, faculty, and staff or customers with more than 20,000 monthly active users on Google Workspace for Education will be able to request an increase in pooled storage. We will provide instructions later this year on this process and will work with you to help manage your storage needs. No action is required at this time. - Storage management functionality will be added to the admin console.
This will allow you to set user contribution limits on a per user, group, or organization basis. When it launches, you will also be able to view your largest storage users and delete shared drives from the admin console. Learn about steps you can take today to prepare for these changes.
